EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team jumped to second in the latest NCAA II Great Lakes Region rankings after its 6-0 week, including a sweep of No. 4 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
This is the highest the Screaming Eagles have been ranked in the region since the 1998 season, which also was the last time the Eagles qualified for the NCAA II Tournament.
USI (33-14, 15-5 GLVC), which is 24-6 in the Great Lakes Region, trailed SIU Edwardsville for the top spot in the region.
Gannon University, the University of Indianapolis, and Wayne State University rounded out the top five while Northern Kentucky University, Lewis University, and Northwood University were sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively. Ashland University and West Virginia Wesleyan College rounded out the top 10.
The Eagles, winners of 19 of their last 21 games, host Kentucky Wesleyan College in a GLVC doubleheader Saturday at noon to close out the regular season. USI will honor their four seniors—catcher
Angie Davis (Greenwood, Indiana), pitchers
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) and
Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana), and shortstop
Krista Nugent (Hurricane, Utah)—prior to the first game on Saturday as part of the Senior Day and Varsity Club Day festivities.
