EVANSVILLE, Ind.
– The University of Southern Indiana baseball team started a weekend homestand by splitting a doubleheader with Lewis University Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI won the nightcap, 7-1, after dropping the opener in extra innings, 3-2.

The Screaming Eagles' offense sprang to life in the first inning of the game two, scoring four runs on five hits to take the early 4-0 lead. The Eagles (18-26, 15-25 GLVC) would seal the game with three runs in the fifth to lead 7-0. The Flyers (8-36, 7-29 GLVC) got back-to-back doubles in the sixth for their only tally of the game.

Freshman catcher Kirby Dunagan (Fountaintown, Indiana) led the 12-hit USI attack in game two, going three-for-three with a double, two runs scored, and three RBIs. He was followed by senior designated hitter Jed Davis (Grayville, Indiana), who was two-for-three with three RBIs.

Junior third baseman Sam Shahine (W. Lafayette, Indiana) also had a pair of hits, both doubles, and two runs scored in the victory.

On the mound, junior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) picked up his fourth victory of the year and his fifth complete game of the year. Summers (4-2) allowed a run and scattered six hits, while striking out four.

The victory ties Summers with junior right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) for the team lead in wins.

In the opener, the Flyers' offense struck USI starting left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) late for the win. Arnold (2-5) had held the Flyers to just one hit over the first five innings before opening the door for a pair of Lewis runs in the sixth with a throwing error on an attempted sacrifice bunt.

Arnold went all eight innings in the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, and six hits. He also struck out three batters

Lewis scored the game-winner in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore centerfielder Billy Duffy, scoring senior pinch runner Sam Sacco. USI scored first in the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth and tied the score, 2-2, with a tally in the bottom of the sixth.

The Eagles left nine runners on-base in game one, stranding the bases loaded in the second and the eighth innings.

USI sophomore second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) led the Eagles in the opener, going two-for-three with a run scored. Davis also had a pair of hits in the loss for USI.

The Eagles and the Flyers will finish the four-game series at the USI Baseball Field Sunday. The first pitch of the doubleheader is noon.
