Box Score Game 1: Lewis 4, USI 2 (10 innings)
Box Score Game 2: Lewis 6, USI 4
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team concluded a four-game series with Lewis University by dropping a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI lost the opener, 4-2, in 10 innings, and the nightcap, 6-4.
USI's record falls to 18-28 overall and 15-27 in the GLVC, while Lewis goes to 10-36 overall, 9-29 GLVC.
The Flyers won game one with a pair of runs in the 10th inning off of Screaming Eagles starting right-handerÂ
Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana). Senior third baseman Victor Naut scored the winning run on a RBI-triple by freshman rightfielder Tim Bingham with one out.
Vetter (4-3) went the distance for USI in the opener, allowing four runs, three earned, and striking out a career-high 11 batters.
Lewis scored first in game one on a pass ball to take a 1-0 in the first inning. USI bounced back to tie the score in the bottom of the inning when freshman centerfielderÂ
Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) doubled home sophomore second basemanÂ
Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina).
The Flyers regained the lead in the top of the ninth, 2-1, after loading the bases with no one out. Vetter sandwiched a run-scoring fielder's choice between a pair of strike outs to end the innings.
The Eagles tied the score again in the bottom of the ninth, 2-2. Mastroianni tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a one-out RBI-single by freshman designated hitterÂ
Kirby Dunagan (Greensburg, Indiana).
In the nightcap, the Eagles could not generate enough offense after spotting the Flyers three runs in the first inning and five runs after two-and-a-half frames. Lewis would make that lead stand up for the win.
USI would get as close as 5-4 after four innings, but could not push another run across in the final three innings. The best chance the Eagles had to tie the score was in the sixth when they loaded the bases with two outs before junior first basemanÂ
Josh Malone (Chesterton, Indiana) flew out to end the threat.
Mastroianni led the Eagles in the nightcap, going three-for-four with a pair of runs scored and two stolen bases. The sophomore second bagger hit .467 for the weekend (7-15) with five runs scored, a double, and a triple.
USI resumes action Wednesday when it plays in the third annual "Battle at the Braun" against the University of Evansville. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Eagles will conclude the 2005-06 season at the USI Baseball Field next weekend (April 29-30) when they host Saint Joseph's College.
