LOUISVILLE, Ky.
– The University of Southern Indiana baseball team swept both ends of a doubleheader in extra innings at Bellarmine University Wednesday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky. USI won the opener, 1-0 in nine innings, and the nightcap, 12-10 in eight innings.

The Eagles raise their record to 17-25 overall and 14-24 in the GLVC, while the Knights fall to 21-19 overall, 16-17 GLVC.

USI won the opener when freshman centerfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) scored the game winner in the ninth inning on a one-out double by junior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana). Werry had singled to lead off the inning before advancing to third when freshman designated hitter Kirby Dunagan (Greensburg, Indiana) reached on an error to set the stage for Slade.

The Eagles were led on the mound by junior right-hander Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky), who won his second straight start. Clark (3-4), who was making just his second start in 13 appearances this season, posted his first collegiate complete game and shutout against the Knights.

The junior right-hander went all nine innings, while scattering five hits. He also struck out three Knights and allowed only one runner to reach third.

In the nightcap, USI scored five times in the eighth inning to break a 7-7 tie and win 12-10. The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead with three runs in the second and four runs in the third before the Knights offense jumped into gear with six runs in the fourth and a tally in the bottom of the seventh to send the contest into an extra frame.

USI was led offensively by senior first baseman Chris Turner (West Lafayette, Indiana), who was three-for-five with two triples and five RBIs. Turner's three-RBI triple in the eighth inning was the margin of victory for the Eagles.

On the mound, senior right-hand Dustin Jourdan (Evansville, Indiana) picked up his first win of the year, pitching one inning in relief. Jourdan (1-0) allowed four hits and three runs before giving way to freshman right-hander Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana), who recorded his first collegiate save.

Junior left-hander Brent Wendholt (St. Anthony, Indiana) got the no-decision for USI. Wendolt allowed six runs, but only one earned run in 3 1/3 inning of work.

The Eagles are at home this weekend (April 22-23) when they host Lewis University for a four-game series at the USI Baseball Field. The first pitch is scheduled for noon each day.
