EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – University of Southern Indiana junior right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) threw his first collegiate no-hitter as the Screaming Eagles opened a road doubleheader with a 2-1 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Sunday at Roy Lee Field in the Simmons Baseball Complex. The no-hitter was the first for a USI hurler since 2003 when Drew Neel no-hit Brescia University.

Vetter (4-2) threw eight innings and allowed just six batters to reach base on three walks and three hit batters. The lone SIUE run scored in the third inning after a lead-off walk, a balk, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly. He also stranded a runner at third in the fourth and at second in the seventh.

The USI offense got the game winning run across the plate in the eighth-inning extra-frame when freshman centerfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) scored on a base hit by junior first baseman Josh Malone (Chesterton, Indiana). Werry had reached base on a one-out double down the left field line.

Werry also scored the first run of the game after opening the second inning with a single and got into scoring position by stealing second base. He scored on senior catcher Chris Turner's (West Lafayette, Indiana) two out single.

In the nightcap, the Cougar hitters exploded for 10 runs and 12 hits to win 10-0. SIUE's 16th shutout of the season tied an NCAA Division II record set by Central Missouri State University last season.

USI senior right-hander Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana) took the loss for the Eagles. Watson (1-4) went two innings and allowed four runs, while freshman right-hander Adam Thomas (Plainfield, Indiana) allowed six runs (four earned) in two innings of relief. Sophomore right-hander Matt Nichols (Plainfield, Indiana) finished the game for USI.

The Eagles continue its four-game road-swing Wednesday in Louisville, Kentucky, when they play Bellarmine University. The first pitch is scheduled for noon (CDT). USI returns home next weekend (April 22-23) when it hosts Lewis University for a four-game series.
