EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team rallied from a three-run deficit to win the first game of a doubleheader, 4-3, over Lewis University Saturday afternoon at the USI Softball Field. The Flyers, however, ended the Screaming Eagles' five-game winning streak with a 7-1 triumph in game two.

USI (27-14, 9-5 GLVC) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and another in the bottom of the seventh to come away with the game-one victory.

Senior catcher Angie Davis (Greenwood, Indiana) got the Eagles on the board with a two-run single in the sixth inning. The Eagles tied the scored when freshman Jami Martin (North Vernon, Indiana), who pinch-ran for Davis, scored on a wild pitch. The wild pitch was one of four that the Lewis pitching staff threw in the sixth inning.

The Eagles ended the game in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore leftfielder Kathy Wood's (Lynnville, Indiana) single was mishandled by Lewis leftfielder and reigning GLVC Player of the Year Robin Martz. Martz went to scoop the ball, but it went underneath her glove and rolled to the fence, allowing senior shortstop Krista Nugent (Hurricane, Utah) to score from first base.

Senior pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) picked up the victory after allowing three runs, two earned, off seven hits. Grover (15-6), who ranks third all-time at USI with 53 career victories, struck out three and walked a batter en route to her career-high tying 15th victory.

Other notable performances in the first game included sophomore third baseman Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio), who went 2-for-2 with two doubles and a run scored. Eickholt needs just one double to tie Lori Leonard's single-season school record of 17 set in 1998.

In game two, the Flyers (25-9, 11-5 GLVC) pounded out eight hits and took advantage of four USI errors to claim the 7-1 victory. Junior catcher Kristy Vanek went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs as the Flyers were able to put an end to USI's win streak.

USI's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning when junior utility player Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky) grounded out to second base to drive in Davis.

Senior pitcher Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) took the loss, giving up seven runs, four earned, off eight hits. McNaughton (12-8) struck out five, while issuing just one walk.

The Eagles complete their eight-game home stand Wednesday when they host No. 5-ranked and GLVC front-runner Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
