EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team was swept by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI falls to 14-24 overall and 11-23 in the GLVC, while SIUE goes to 25-11-1 overall, 20-10-1 GLVC.
In the game one pitcher's-duel between USI's senior left-handerÂ
Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) and SIUE's senior right-hander Kyle Jones, Jones came away with the victory, 1-0. Arnold entered the game ranked number two nationally in ERA, while Jones was ranked number one.
Jones (8-0) went six of the seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out 10. He also extended his NCAA Division II record to 54 scoreless innings. Freshman left-hander Patrick Keller finished the game for Jones to earn a save.
Arnold lost 1-0 for the third straight time and saw his ERA rise to just 0.87. He went the distance allowing a first inning run and nine hits. The USI left-hander also struck out four Cougar hitters.
The Screaming Eagles lost the nightcap in heart-breaking fashion, 6-3 in 11 innings. The Cougars scored three in the ninth to tie the game and three in the 11th inning for the victory.
USI built its 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third and a single tally in the fifth. Freshman short stopÂ
Alex Thierhoff (Greenfield, Indiana) led off the third with a walk and scored on a triple by designated hitterÂ
Jeremy Edwards (Farmersburg, Indiana). Edwards would make the score 2-0 when he scored on a single by sophomore second basemanÂ
Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina).
The third Eagle run came when Mastroianni scored on a RBI single by junior rightfielderÂ
Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana).

Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) went the first eight-plus innings for the Eagles and had to settle for the no decision. Summers allowed eight hits and two runs, while striking out seven.

Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Indiana) suffered the loss in relief. Clark (2-4), who followed junior left-hander

Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana) finished the game for the Eagles.
USI and SIUE finish the four-game series Sunday in Edwardsville, Illinois, at Roy Lee Field in the Simmons Baseball Complex. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
