EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team was swept by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI falls to 14-24 overall and 11-23 in the GLVC, while SIUE goes to 25-11-1 overall, 20-10-1 GLVC.

In the game one pitcher's-duel between USI's senior left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) and SIUE's senior right-hander Kyle Jones, Jones came away with the victory, 1-0. Arnold entered the game ranked number two nationally in ERA, while Jones was ranked number one.

Jones (8-0) went six of the seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out 10. He also extended his NCAA Division II record to 54 scoreless innings. Freshman left-hander Patrick Keller finished the game for Jones to earn a save.

Arnold lost 1-0 for the third straight time and saw his ERA rise to just 0.87. He went the distance allowing a first inning run and nine hits. The USI left-hander also struck out four Cougar hitters.

The Screaming Eagles lost the nightcap in heart-breaking fashion, 6-3 in 11 innings. The Cougars scored three in the ninth to tie the game and three in the 11th inning for the victory.

USI built its 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third and a single tally in the fifth. Freshman short stop Alex Thierhoff (Greenfield, Indiana) led off the third with a walk and scored on a triple by designated hitter Jeremy Edwards (Farmersburg, Indiana). Edwards would make the score 2-0 when he scored on a single by sophomore second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina).

The third Eagle run came when Mastroianni scored on a RBI single by junior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana).

USI junior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) went the first eight-plus innings for the Eagles and had to settle for the no decision. Summers allowed eight hits and two runs, while striking out seven.

Eagles junior right-hand Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Indiana) suffered the loss in relief. Clark (2-4), who followed junior left-hander Brent Wendholt (St. Anthony, Indiana) and senior right-hand Dustin Jourdan (Evansville, Indiana) to the mound in the ninth, was charged for all three runs in the 11th. Freshman right-hander Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana) finished the game for the Eagles.

USI and SIUE finish the four-game series Sunday in Edwardsville, Illinois, at Roy Lee Field in the Simmons Baseball Complex. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
