EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Senior catcher/first baseman
Angie Davis (Greenwood, Indiana) laid down a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning to score sophomore leftfielder
Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) and give the University of Southern Indiana softball team a 2-1 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against Oakland City University Tuesday afternoon at the USI Softball Field.
Davis also played a key role in game one, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs as the Screaming Eagles bested the Lady Oaks, 2-0.
USI (24-13) got an outstanding effort out of senior pitcher
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) in game one. Grover (13-6) allowed just one hit and one base runner as she went the distance. Grover struck out seven batters and did not allow anyone to reach second base.
In game two, USI found itself trailing by a run after the Lady Oaks (7-22) scored on a bazaar sacrifice fly in the top half of the sixth inning. OCU third baseman Rachelle Jordan hit a pop fly in foul territory that Davis and junior utility player
Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky) went diving for in between home plate and first base.
Davis made the catch, but with no one covering the plate, OCU's Ashley Smith made a heads-up base running decision and tagged from third base to score the go-ahead run.
Nichols, however, hit a one-out double into the left-center gap in the bottom half of the inning to score pitcher
Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) and tie the contest at 1-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Wood reached base on a fielding error and advanced to third via a sacrifice bunt and an infield single before scoring the game-winning run.
McNaughton (11-7), who was 2-for-3 in the second game, picked up the victory after allowing one unearned run off four hits. She fanned a season-high 12 batters and did not allow a walk.
USI returns to action Friday when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in the first of a critical six-game stretch that sees the Eagles host Lewis University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville—the top two teams in the GVLC standings.
The first pitch of Friday's doubleheader is slated for noon at the USI Softball Field.
