Eagles grounded by Hawks

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team lost a doubleheader to Quincy University, 1-0 and 4-2, Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI falls to 11-15 overall and 8-14 in the GLVC, while Quincy goes to 16-9 overall, 14-6 GLVC.

In the opener, the Screaming Eagles wasted a seven-inning gem by senior left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) in the 1-0 loss. Arnold (2-2) went the distance for the Eagles, scattering six hits and striking out six.

The Hawks scored their only run in the second inning on an RBI single by QU third baseman Cole Koester, scoring leftfielder Matt Nichols. Nichols had singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice by rightfielder Terrence Whittler.

The Eagle bats were cold against QU starter Brad Stone. Stone (6-1) went seven innings and gave up only two hits to USI.

In the nightcap, USI allowed three unearned runs in losing 4-2. USI right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) went all nine innings for the Eagles, allowing nine hits and four runs (one earned). Summers (2-2) also struck out a career-best eight batters.

The Hawks got to Summers with a pair of runs in the second inning and the eighth innings.

USI scored its runs in the sixth and the eighth, both by freshman shortstop Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana). He scored his first run in the sixth on a RBI single by freshman third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana). Bruce scored again in the eighth after tripling to left and came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina).

The Eagles and the Hawks resume their four-game GLVC series Sunday at the USI Baseball Field The first pitch Sunday is scheduled for noon.
