OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team belted four home runs in a 10-inning 15-11 victory over Oakland City University Wednesday afternoon in Oakland City, Indiana. USI returns to the .500 mark at 4-4, while Oakland City falls to 3-4.
The Screaming Eagles spotted the Mighty Oaks seven runs in the fourth inning before turning the offensive power. USI sophomore third basemanÂ
Sam Shahine (W. Lafayette, Indiana) jumped started the offense on a grand slam with two outs in the sixth inning to cut the Oakland City lead to 7-4. The home run was Shahine's first as a collegiate player.
USI would go on to tie the score 7-7 in the sixth on a double by freshman shortstop/second basemanÂ
Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana) and a single by freshman second basman/shortstopÂ
Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana).
The Eagles would take their first lead of the game in the eighth inning on a three-run home run by Bruce to make the score 10-7. USI senior catcherÂ
Jed Davis (Grayville, Illinois) extended the lead to 11-7 on a solo shot to lead-off the ninth. The home runs were Davis' first of the season and Bruce's first as a collegiate player.
The Mighty Oaks would score four times in the bottom of the ninth off of three Eagle pitchers to send the game into an extra frame.
In the top of the 10th, the game winning hit was a grand slam by USI freshman centerfielderÂ
Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana). The blast was Werry's first collegiate home run.
The winning pitcher for the Eagles was freshman right-handerÂ
Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana). Dewig got the final four outs in the game, three of them strike outs, to pick up his first win as an Eagle.
The Eagles return to action in the GLVC this weekend when they host the University of Missouri-Rolla at the USI Baseball Field Saturday and Sunday. The first pitch of each doubleheader is scheduled for noon each day.
