Game two suspended due to darkness

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana baseball team survived a two-hour rain delay to the start of its doubleheader Saturday with the University of Missouri-Rolla. The Screaming Eagles posted a 4-2 victory in game one and lead the Miners, 5-0, in the second game, which was suspended due to darkness after six innings.

Game two of Saturday's doubleheader will resume in the top of the seventh Sunday at 11 a.m. prior to the scheduled doubleheader (games three and four of the series) between the two clubs.

USI (5-4, 2-3 GLVC) rang up two runs off five hits in the bottom of the second inning of game one to take a 2-1 advantage. Senior catcher Jed Davis (Grayville, Illinois) had an RBI double in the inning, while freshman centerfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony) scored on a fielding error by UM-Rolla leftfielder Nick Zurweller.

The Eagles tacked on another run in the third inning to extend their lead to 3-1 when sophomore third baseman Sam Shahine (West Lafayette, Indiana) roped an RBI single to centerfield, scoring freshman second baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) from second base.

UM-Rolla (4-7, 2-2 GLVC) got to within a run in the top of the sixth inning when Brett McClean drilled an RBI double to centerfield. USI, however, matched the run when Shahine scored on a wild pitch after advancing to third base on a passed ball.

Junior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) earned the victory after giving up just two runs off six hits in seven innings of work. Summers (1-0) mowed down five UM-Rolla batters, while not issuing a walk.

Tavish Hill (2-1) was charged with the loss after giving up three runs off seven hits in four innings of work.

In the second game, USI has got two RBIs from sophomore first baseman Josh Malone (Chesterton, Indiana) and freshman outfielder Greg Horn (Plainfield, Indiana), as well as an RBI from junior outfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana).

Senior lefty Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) is positioned to be the winner if USI's lead can hold up in the final three innings Sunday morning. Arnold went six innings, giving up just six hits and no runs.
