EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team could not keep the handle on the baseball in losing a 9-3 decision to Oakland City City University Tuesday afternoon. USI falls to 3-4 overall, while OCU goes to 3-3.
The two teams finish the four-game home-and-home series Wednesday at Oakland City. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Mighty Oaks scored all of the tallies they would need in the first inning, pushing across four unearned runs. Oakland City would score once more in the second inning, the fifth inning, and the seventh inning to take a 7-0 lead.
USI would try to get back into the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, only to see Oakland City respond with two runs in the top of the eighth. The Screaming Eagles would push across one more run in the bottom of the eighth for the 9-3 final.
The Eagles committed a season-high eight errors in the game, while the Mighty Oaks committed four of their own.
USI sophomore right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) took the loss. Kehrt (1-1) went six innings, allowing six runs (one earned) on eight hits, while striking out a career-best eight batters.
OCU right-hander David Marcum (1-1) held USI hitters to seven hits and two runs over seven innings to earn the victory. USI freshman shortstop Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana), freshman second baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana), and freshman designated hitter Ryan Reed (Fishers, Indiana) had two hits each to lead the Eagles at the plate.
