USI ends road trip with split

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team finished its first GLVC road trip of the year by splitting a doubleheader at Rockhurst University Sunday afternoon in Kansas City, Missouri. USI won the opener, 1-0, but lost the nightcap, 4-3.

USI's record goes to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the GLVC, while Rockhurst falls to 6-3 overall, 3-1 GLVC. Rockhurst also won the season series, 3-1.

USI junior right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) won his second start in a row by throwing a one-hit shut. It was the first collegiate one-hitter and shutout for Vetter (2-0).

Vetter went seven innings and allowed one hit, while striking out a career-high nine batters. He did not allow a runner to reach third until the sixth and only three batters to reach second in the complete game.

The Screaming Eagles scored the winning run in the first inning. Freshman second baseman Alex Thierhoff (Greenfield, Indiana) led the game off with a double and scored when senior first baseman Chris Turner (West Lafayette, Indiana) reached on an error by the shortstop with two outs.

In the nightcap, Rockhurst defeated USI, 4-3, with a run in the bottom of the ninth. The Eagles spotted the Hawks a 3-0 lead before cutting the lead to 3-2 in the sixth and tying the game in the top of the ninth.

Junior right-hander Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) to the loss in relief. Clark (0-2) went 1 1/3 innings and allowed a run, a hit, and a walk. Senior right-hander Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana) started for the Eagles, going six innings and allowed three runs and nine hits.

At the plate in game two, freshman centerfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) led the way with a pair of hits.

The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the USI Baseball Field Tuesday when they host Oakland City University for a 1 p.m. contest.
