KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team was swept in the first day of GLVC play, falling to Rockhurst University, 5-4 in 10 innings and 1-0, in Kansas City, Missouri. USI falls to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the GLVC, while Rockhurst goes to 5-2 overall, 2-0 GLVC.

The doubleheader was delayed for two hours due to heavy rains in the Kansas City area.

In the opener, the Hawks plated an unearned run with one out in the bottom of the 10th for the victory. Junior right-hander Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) took the loss of the Eagles in relief, allowing an unearned run and one walk. Clark is 0-1.

USI junior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) started and went the first 8 2/3 innings of work. Summers allowed 11 hits and four runs (all in the first two innings) and struck out seven. The seven strikeouts tied a career-high for Summers.

At the plate, senior designated hitter Chris Turner (West Lafayette, Indiana) led the way for USI by going three-for-five with three RBIs and a double. Turner drove in all three runs in the third inning, tying the score 4-4 after Rockhurst had jumped out to an early 4-0 lead.

In the nightcap, USI was only able to manage one hit and had just three runners make it to second base. Freshman second baseman/shortstop Alex Thierhoff (Greeenfield, Indiana) singled in the third for the only USI hit.

Rockhurst scored the game's only run in the first inning off of USI starting left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana), who is 0-1. Arnold went the distance for USI, allowing one run and seven hits, while striking out a career-high six batters.

USI finishes the weekend series at Rockhurst with a doubleheader at noon Sunday. The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the USI Baseball Field Tuesday when they host Oakland City University for a 1 p.m. contest.
