EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team was swept by Northern Kentucky University, 8-4 and 5-1, Tuesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles fall to 11-13 overall and 8-12 in the GLVC, while the Norse go to 17-9-1 overall, 15-5-1 GLVC.
In game one, the Norse took an early 3-0 lead before the Eagles could get on the scoreboard. USI cut the lead to 3-2, when NKU scored four times in the top of the fourth to put the game away. The Eagles tried to get back into the game with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the fourth, but could not advance a runner past second base the rest of the game.
Eagles' starting right-handerÂ
Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) took the loss for USI. Two of the eight runs allowed by Kehrt (2-3) were earned in 3 2/3 innings of work. He also allowed eight hits and struck out one.
USI grabbed the lead in the nightcap, 1-0. Junior leftfielderÂ
Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) started the bottom of the second with a double and scored on a RBI single by freshman designated hitterÂ
Ryan Gilliland (Aledo, Illinois).
NKU responded with three runs in the top of the third and sealed the game with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth for the 5-1 victory.
Eagles' junior right-handerÂ
Brent Wendholt (St. Anthony, Indiana) took the loss for USI. Wendholt (0-2) went five innings, allowed four hits and three runs (two earned), and struck out two.
The Eagles resume GLVC action this weekend at the USI Baseball Field when they host GLVC-leading Quincy University for a four-game series. The first pitch Saturday and Sunday is scheduled for noon each day.
