Errors plague Eagles as they drop two to UM-Rolla

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team committed a combined six errors Sunday afternoon as it lost both games of a doubleheader to the University of Missouri-Rolla, 3-2 and 5-2, at the USI Softball Field.

USI (14-11, 3-3 GLVC) gave up just one earned run the entire day and could not muster very much offense as the Miners ran their record to 21-3 overall and 4-2 in the GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles return to action Saturday when they take on Gannon University at 1 p.m. (CST) at the Great Lakes Regional Shootout in Wheeling, West Virginia. USI also faces West Liberty State College Friday at 6 p.m. (CST) as well as Wheeling Jesuit University and West Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday at 8 a.m. (CDT) and 10 a.m. (CDT), respectively.

Game One
Missouri-Rolla 3, Southern Indiana 2

USI scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull to within a run, but was unable to push across the game-tying and the game-winning runs, which stood at first and second base with one out.

It looked as if the Eagles would tie the game up and possibly win the contest when junior second baseman Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana) hit a shot down the right field line. However, UM-Rolla's Lauren Feltmann made a running catch to end the threat and preserve the 3-2 victory for the Miners.

Senior hurler Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) was charged with the loss in game one. McNaughton (6-6) gave up three unearned runs off seven hits in seven innings of work. She walked four batters while recording five strikeouts.

As a team, USI committed four errors, which led to all three UM-Rolla runs.

Offensively, freshmen utility players Lacey Ligmanowski (Homer Glen, Illinois) and Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) went a combined 3-for-7 with a run scored and two RBIs.

Game Two
Missouri-Rolla 5, Southern Indiana 2

UM-Rolla second baseman Kandi Wieberg led the game off with a triple and scored on a throwing error to get the Miners off to a quick 1-0. In the third inning, the Miners took advantage of an error by slamming a pair of two-out home runs over the leftfield fence to plate four runners and take a 5-0 lead.

USI had an opportunity to respond in the bottom of the third inning. However, the Eagles had a runner thrown out at home before ending the inning with the bases loaded.

Junior first baseman Jennifer Mullikin (Greenwood, Indiana) hit a two-run shot over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the fourth to draw the Eagles to within three runs, but the Eagles could not get any closer as the Miners closed out the 5-2 victory.

Senior Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) was charged with her first loss in the last nine outings. Grover gave up five runs, just one earned, off six hits. She walked four batters while notching four strike outs.
