EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field, but won the season series. USI came-from-behind to win the opener in extra innings, 8-7, while UW-Parkside won the nightcap, 4-2.
USI's record goes to 11-11 overall and 8-10 in the GLVC, while UW-Parkside goes to 7-15, 4-10 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles won game one in the bottom of the ninth of the seven inning game when sophomore second basemanÂ
Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) was hit by a pitch with the bases loads. Mastroianni drove in senior catcherÂ
Jed Davis (Grayville, Illinois) with the winning run.
USI had trailed by as many as three runs in the opener before mounting a comeback with a tally in the five of the last six innings of play.
Junior right-handerÂ
Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) got the win for USI in relief of junior starting right-handerÂ
Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana). Clark (1-3) went 4 2/3 innings and allowed just one hit and struck out three batters.
In the nightcap, USI could not come back after spotting UW-Parkside four runs in the first two innings to fall, 4-2. USI senior right-handerÂ
Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana) went the distance in the loss, allowing eight hits and four runs. Watson (0-2) also struck out six Ranger batters.
For the doubleheader, USI was led by offensively by freshman centerfielderÂ
Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) and freshman shortstopÂ
Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana). Werry was a combined five-for-eight in the doubleheader with a run scored and two RBIs, while Bruce was three-for-four with four walks, a run scored and two RBIs.
The Eagles resume GLVC play Tuesday when they host Northern Kentucky University for a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
