USI reaches .500 with doubleheader sweep

Box Score: USI 1, UWP 0
Box Bcore Game 2: USI 8, UWP 6

EVANSVILLE, Ind.
– The University of Southern Indiana baseball team reached the .500 mark with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field, 1-0 and 8-6. USI raises its record to 10-10 overall and 7-9 in the GLVC, while UWP falls to 6-14 overall, 3-9 GLVC.

The doubleheader sweep of UWP was a first for USI since 1997. The Screaming Eagles also reach the .500 mark for the season for the first time in three weeks.

The Eagles started the sweep with a 1-0 victory in the opener. USI sophomore second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) scored the only run the Eagles would need in the first inning on a single by senior first baseman Chris Turner (W. Lafayette, Indiana).

Mastroianni opened the game with a single and advanced to second on a stolen base before scoring on the single.

USI senior left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) picked up his second win of the year, going all seven innings. Arnold (2-1) scattered six hits and did not walk a batter, while striking out four.

The USI hurler worked out of a pair of jams late in the game. The Rangers had runners at third base with less than two outs in both the fifth and sixth inning, only to stranded by Arnold.

USI had to come-from-behind in the nightcap after spotting UW-Parkside four runs in the first three innings. The Rangers scored one in the first, two in the second, and one in the third off of USI starter Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana).

Summers (2-1), a junior right-hander, settled down and blanked the Rangers over the next three innings to get USI back in the game. He earned the victory by going 8 2/3 innings allowing six runs, four earned runs and striking out five batters.

Senior right-hander Dustin Jourdan (Evansville, Indiana) earned his first collegiate save by getting the final batter out in the ninth and strand three Rangers on base.

The USI offensive eight-run explosion in the fifth inning was led by freshman centerfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana). Werry got USI on the board with a two-run home run and gave the Eagles the margin of victory with a two-run single all in the fifth inning. He was two-for-two in the inning with four RBIs.

The Eagles and the Rangers will conclude the four-game series Sunday at the USI Baseball Field. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
