Game 1: USI 6, KWC 1
Game 2: KWC 3, USI 0
OWENSBORO, Ky. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team won the opener, 6-1, but lost the nightcap, 3-0, in Wednesday's doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan College. USI's record goes to 8-10 overall and 5-9 in the GLVC, while KWC goes to 12-8 overall, 10-6 GLVC.
USI sophomore right-handerÂ
Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) recorded his first complete game and his second victory of the year in the 6-1 Screaming Eagles win. Kehrt (2-2) allowed four hits and run, while striking out seven hitters in seven innings of work.
Kehrt's toughest inning was the third when he worked out of a bases-loaded, no-one out jam. He worked out of the jam by allowing just one run and stranding two.
At the plate, USI took the lead in the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Freshman third basemanÂ
Alex Thierhoff (Greenfield, Indiana) scored on a fielder's choice by freshman shortstopÂ
Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana), while senior catcherÂ
Jed Davis (Grayville, Illinois) scored on a wild pitch.
The Eagles pushed four insurance runs across in the top of the seventh. The offensive surge was highlighted by a RBI double by sophomore second basemanÂ
Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) and a two-run home run by freshman centerfielderÂ
Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana).
KWC junior right-hander James Thomas stifled the USI offense in the nightcap as the Panthers won 3-0. Thomas (3-0) went the distance, scattering three USI hits over nine innings for the complete game shutout.
USI junior left-handerÂ
Brent Wendholt (St. Anthony, Indiana) pitched well in his first start of the year, but took the loss. Wendholt (0-1) went 5 2/3 innings and allowed four hits and three runs. Freshman right-handerÂ
Adam Thomas (Plainfield, Indiana) and senior right-handerÂ
Dustin Jourdan (Evansville, Indiana) finished the game for the Eagles.
The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field this weekend when they host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for a four-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for noon Saturday and Sunday.
