Eagles split doubleheader with Indianapolis

Bounce back with nine-inning victory in game two

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to best the University of Indianapolis, 7-4, in the second game of a GLVC doubleheader Saturday. The Screaming Eagles lost the first game, 11-0, in five innings.

USI (12-9, 1-1 GLVC) took an early 3-0 lead, but found itself down by a run heading into the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore third baseman Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio), who had just one hit on the day, drove in the game-tying run in the seventh as the Eagles forced extra innings.

Junior second baseman Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana) drove in two runs in the top of the ninth inning to put the Eagles up, 6-4, while senior catcher Angie Davis's (Greenwood, Indiana) capped the ninth inning with an RBI.

Lindenschmidt went 3-for-5 in the second game with a double, triple, and three RBIs, while Davis was 2-for-5 from the plate with a pair of RBIs. Freshman utility player Lacey Ligmanowski (Homer Glenn, Indiana) went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and three runs scored.

Senior pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) picked up the win to improve to 7-4 on the season after giving up four runs off eight hits in nine innings of work.

In the first game, USI surrendered nine unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and failed to record a hit as it lost via the eight-run rule. USI committed four errors in the fourth inning alone and six in the game.

Senior hurler Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) was charged with loss despite all the runs in the fourth being unearned. McNaughton falls to 5-5 with the set back.

Indianapolis's (12-11, 1-1 GLVC) senior hurler Beth Wendlinger was the pitcher of record in both games. Wendlinger held the Eagles hitless in game one before being tagged for 12 hits and seven runs in the second game.

USI, which had its Sunday doubleheader with Saint Joseph's College postponed due to cold weather and poor field conditions, returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Morehead, Kentucky, to take on Division I Morehead State University. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
