INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team was swept in a GLVC doubleheader by the University of Indianapolis, 4-3 and 7-6, Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis, Indiana. USI falls to 6-8 overall and 3-7 in the GLVC, while Indianapolis goes to 9-5 overall, 6-5 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles, who have lost four in a row, have dropped five one-run games this season and four in the last inning.

In the opener, the Eagles came back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning. USI sophomore Sam Shahine (W. Lafayette, Indiana) drove in the tying run in the seventh with a pinch hit single.

The Greyhounds' leftfielder Cliff Eiland ended the game in the bottom of the seventh with a home run to rightfield off of Eagles' junior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana). Summers (1-1) was USI's starter, going 6 1/3 inning and allowing five hits and four runs (two earned).

The nightcap saw USI jump out in front early, building a 5-0 lead after three innings. Indianapolis got back into the game with five runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score 5-5.

USI retook the lead with a run in the top of the ninth on a suicide squeeze. Senior catcher Chris Turner (W. Lafayette, Indiana) laid bunted down the first base line, scoring sophomore second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina).

Indianapolis scored twice in the bottom of the inning for the victory. The game winner came when designated hitter Austin Dougherty singled in centerfielder Jake Tranchant with one out off of USI freshman right-hander Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana).

Dewig (1-2) took the loss for USI, allowing a pair of hits and a run in the ninth. Senior left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) started the game and struck out a career-high 10 batters over seven-plus innings of work.

The Eagles and the Greyhounds finish the four-game series on Sunday with the first pitch being thrown at 11 a.m. (CST). USI will finish a six-game road swing Tuesday when it travels to Owensboro, Kentucky, for a conference doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan College.
