EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team is looking to carry its momentum earned from winning 11 of its last 14 games into its GLVC-opener Saturday at 11 a.m. at the University of Indianapolis.
USI (11-8) went 8-2 at the Division II Rebel Spring Games last week after sweeping Kentucky Wesleyan College in a non-conference doubleheader and splitting a twin bill at the University of North Alabama.
The Screaming Eagles' offense has had major surge since the team opened the season in February. USI hit .318 and scored 68 runs during the Rebel Spring Games after hitting .175 with six runs during opening weekend.
Sophomore third baseman
Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) hit .389 with seven doubles, a triple, a home run, and 16 RBIs during the Rebel Spring Games, while junior second baseman
Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana) hit .361 with four doubles, a home run, and 13 RBIs during USI's trip to Florida. Senior catcher
Angie Davis (Greenwood, Indiana) also stepped up last week, hitting .471 with 11 RBIs.
For the season, Eickholt is hitting .333 with nine doubles and team-leading 18 RBIs. Lindenschmidt is batting .361 with seven doubles and 16 RBIs, while Davis is hitting .362 with a home run and 15 RBIs. Sophomore outfielder/pitcher
Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) leads the Eagles with a .364 batting average.
Defensively, the Eagles have gotten great pitching out of seniors
Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) and
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana). McNaught (5-4) recorded a 0.38 ERA at the Division II Rebel Spring Games, while Grover (6-4) went 5-0 in Florida with a 1.65 ERA. As a team, the Eagles have posted a 0.69 ERA in the last 10 games.
For the season, McNaughton has a team-best 1.86 ERA, while Grover has posted a 2.89 ERA.
Following their doubleheader with Indianapolis, the Eagles travel to Rensselaer, Indiana, to take on Saint Joseph's College Sunday at noon.
