Eagles explode for 22 runs against St. Rose

Fall to C.W. Post, 5-4

KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team churned out one of its most impressive offensive outings in the program's 30-year history Friday evening as it toppled the College of Saint Rose, 22-5, in five innings at the Division II Rebel Spring Games.

USI (10-7) lost to C.W. Post, 5-4, earlier in the day as its season-best six-game win streak came to a close.

The Screaming Eagles conclude the Rebel Spring Games Saturday when they take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha at 11:30 a.m. (CST) and the University of Minnesota-Duluth at 3:10 p.m. (CST).

C.W. Post (5-5) 5, Southern Indiana 4
USI stranded runners at second and third in the bottom of the seventh inning as it lost a heart-breaker, 5-4, to C.W. Post. The loss ended USI's six-game winning streak and 13-game win streak, dating back to last season, at the Rebel Spring Games.

The Eagles drew to within a run in the bottom of the seventh when junior outfielder/pitcher Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky), who made her first collegiate start behind the plate against Saint Rose, hit an RBI double to the fence. It appeared as USI may have had a chance to tie the contest on the play, but senior pitcher Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) stumbled around the base path and was held up at third base.

Offensively, the Eagles also got RBIs out of sophomore third baseman Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio), junior second baseman Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana), and senior catcher Angie Davis (Greenwood, Indiana).

McNaughton (5-3) was charged with the loss despite giving up just one earned run off nine hits. It was McNaughton's first loss in the last six outings.

Southern Indiana 22, College of Saint Rose (1-7) 5 (5 innings)
USI scorched Saint Rose for 13 runs in the top of the fifth to defeat the Golden Knights, 22-5, in five innings. The Eagles scored six runs in the third inning, but Saint Rose answered with five runs in the bottom half of the third. USI scored three more in the fourth before turning out one of its most productive innings in school history.

Although it is not known when the Eagles last reached 20 runs in a single game, it is the first time in at least 17 years that the Eagles have reached the mark. The school-record for runs in a game is 34, set in the 1979 season against St. Mary's-of-the-Woods. USI scored 19 runs against Kentucky Wesleyan College April 1, 2003.

Eickholt led the offensive charge, going 3-for-3 from the plate with five runs batted in, while Davis was 4-of-5 from the plate with four runs batted in. Lindenschmidt also had a big day, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs, while McNaughton was 1-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Sophomore outfielder Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) was 3-of-4 at the dish with four runs scored for the Eagles, who racked up 20 hits, 11 of which came in the fifth frame.

Senior pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) earned the win despite a rough third inning. Grover (5-4), who struck out six batters, allowed five runs, all in the the last half of the third frame, off seven hits in five innings of work. Grover was already working with a 6-0 lead thanks to USI's offensive outburst in the top of the third.

USI added three more tallies in the fourth to build a 9-5 advantage before erupting for 13 runs in the fifth.
