OWENSBORO, Ky.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team recorded its first two victories of the 2006 season by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan College, 4-2 and 6-0, Wednesday at the Panther Field.
In game one, the Screaming Eagles (2-5) scored a run in the top of the third inning and took advantage of a KWC error in the fifth to plate two more runs and go up 3-0. Junior second baseman
Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana) drove in the first run with a two-out double, while senior hurler Lyndsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) and senior catcher
Angie Davis (Greenwood, Indiana) had the RBIs in the fifth inning.
Sophomore third baseman
Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) scored USI's final run on a wild pitch in the seventh after reaching base with a lead-off double. The run gave the Eagles a 4-2 advantage that would hold up for the final score.
McNaughton (1-2) got the win after giving up just two unearned runs in seven innings. She struck out two batters, while walking one and giving up seven hits in the complete-game effort.
In game two, the Eagles relied on a steady stream of offense and a solid pitching performance out of senior
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) to pick up the 6-0 victory. Grover (1-3) scattered four hits throughout seven innings to pick up USI's first shutout of the season.
USI jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Lindenschmidt singled to drive in sophomore leftfielder
Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana). Freshman utility player
Lacey Ligmanowski (Homer Glen, Illinois) had a two-run single the second inning to put the Eagles up 3-0, while Wood came back in the fourth to drive in USI's fourth run with a single.
The Eagles capped the scoring in the fifth with a pair of runs. Senior shortstop
Krista Nugent (Hurricane, Utah) had an RBI triple before scoring on a single by Ligmanowski.
USI returns to action Saturday as it travels to Florence, Alabama, to take on the University of North Alabama in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. The Eagles begin the Division II Rebel Spring Games Monday at 7:50 a.m. against Ferris State University.
