EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team overcame a slow start and powered past Glenville State College, 108-80, Sunday afternoon in the Physical Activities Center. USI gets back on track and raises its record to 10-1 overall, while GSC goes to 3-4.
The game began with the Pioneers jumping out to a 13-3 lead with 16:37 left in the opening half. The Eagles outscored the Pioneers 16-5 over the next eight minutes to take its first lead of the game, 19-18.
The teams traded buckets over the next five minutes before USI took the lead for good with a 16-8 run and went into the locker room with a 43-36 lead at the intermission.
The second half was all USI as the Eagles built a 23-point lead, 80-57, with 9:20 to play in the game. USI would extend the margin to as many as 31 points, 97-66, and settled for the 108-80 win.
USI was led by senior forwardÂ
Keith Christmas (Gary, Indiana) and senior guardÂ
Melvin Hall (Evansville, Indiana) with 20 points each. The 20 points was a career-high for Christmas, who was a perfect eight-of-eight from the field and four-of-five from the line.
Hall scored 20 points for the third time this year, hitting six-of-10 from beyond the three-point arc and seven-of-12 from the field overall.
Christmas and Hall were joined by four other Eagles in double figures. Senior centerÂ
Rashard Sullivan (Miami, Florida) posted his second double-double of the year with 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while junior guardÂ
Kenny Page (Indianapolis, Indiana) had 13 points and a team-high seven assists.
The double-figures scorers were rounded out by senior forwardÂ
Nick Brooks (Robinson, Illinois), who tied a season-high with 12 points, and freshman centerÂ
Brandon Hopf (Ferdinand, Indiana), who dropped 10 points.
USI returns to action December 20-21 in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge, which is hosted by Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. USI plays Wayne State Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. (CST) and Ferris State University Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (CST).
The next home game for USI will be December 30 when the Eagles host Harris-Stowe State University for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
