EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team held off Wayne State University, 78-69, Wednesday evening in the GLAIC/GLVC Challenge in Detroit, Michigan. Sixth-ranked USI raises its record 11-1 overall, while tournament host Wayne State falls to 4-5 in 2006-07.

The victory raises USI's non-conference record to 9-0 this year. The Screaming Eagles also are 13-2 against the GLIAC institutions since 2000.

After the Warriors tied the score 6-6, the Eagles took control of the game with a 10-0 run to make the score 16-6. Wayne State would get back to within six points, 25-19, when USI surged with a 14-2 run to make the score 39-21. The Eagles would match that 18-point margin at the intermission, 42-24.

USI pushed the lead to 19 points, 45-26, in the opening minutes of the second half. Wayne State responded with a 21-11 run to cut the lead to single-digits, 56-47. The Warriors would get as close as five points, 69-64, with 5:38 to play before the Eagles would regain control of the contest and re-extend the lead to 10 points, 77-67, with 28 seconds left.

The Eagles were out-shot for only the second time this season, hitting only 40.3 percent their field goals. They were held to 33.3 percent (11-33) in the second half.

USI's junior guard Kenny Page (Indianapolis, Indiana) led four players in double-figure scoring with 14 points. Senior center Rashard Sullivan followed Page with 12 points, while senior forward Marty Wise (New Orleans, Louisiana) and junior guard Kenny Love (South Bend, Indiana) dropped in 11 points each.

The Eagles conclude action in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge when they play Ferris State University Thursday in Detroit. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (CST). Ferris State fell to 3-6 this season after losing to the University of Indianapolis, 71-60, in the early contest.

After Thursday game with FSU, the Eagles will be off until December 30 when they host Harris-Stowe State University at the Physical Activities Center for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
