EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team reached 20 wins for the 14th-straight year with a 95-70 victory over the University of Indianapolis Thursday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI raises its record to 20-2 overall and 9-2 in the GLVC, while Indianapolis is 2-16, 1-9 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles, who are ranked eighth nationally and third in the Great Lakes Region, began their run of 20-win seasons in 1992-93. They also have reached 20-wins in 15 of the last 17 seasons.
USI was led in the win by senior forwardÂ
Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) and junior forwardÂ
Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana). Thompson dropped in a game-high 25 points and tied a career-high by grabbing 15 rebounds. Van Winkle scored a season-high 23 points, hitting seven three-point field goals.
Van Winkles seven three-point field goals was one short of the USI single-game record.
USI did not take the lead for good until 1:24 left in the first half and led at halftime 43-40. Indianapolis led for a majority of the first half, posting leads of as many as six points, 17-11.
The Eagle soared in the second half, outscoring the Greyhounds 52-30. USI had a 24-7 run to take its first 20 point lead, 67-47, and would increase the margin to as many as 27 points on three different occasions.
USI continues GLVC action Saturday afternoon when Saint Joseph's College comes to the PAC for a top-10 showdown. The 3rd-ranked Pumas raised their record to 18-1 overall and 8-1 in the GLVC after defeating Kentucky Wesleyan College, 91-85, in Owensboro, Kentucky.
