Screaming Eagles hold on to win 85-79

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team held off a second half surge by the University of Alabama-Huntsville to win 85-79 Monday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI raises its record to 10-5 overall, while UAH falls to 5-6.

The Screaming Eagles extended a 12-points halftime lead to 27 points, 78-51, with 9:44 to play when the Lady Chargers exploded for a 26-3 run during the next seven minutes. UAH would cut the USI lead to three, 80-77, during the run, but could not close the gap any further.

USI freshman guard Keisha Collins (South Holland, Illinois) led the Eagles down the stretch by scoring five of her nine points in the final three minutes to stop the Lady Charger run. Collins stopped a UAH run of 21-straight points with a pair of free throws with 2:46 to play and sealed the game with a lay-up and a free throw in the final 1:36.

The Eagles had three players score in double-figures, led by the 22 point performance of junior guard/forward Katie Thiesenhusen (Muskego, Wisconsin). She was followed by senior forward Ashley Green (Otterbein, Indiana) and sophomore forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana) with 17 points and 15 points, respectively.

USI resumes the 2005-06 GLVC schedule when it travels to Bellarmine University on Thursday for a 4:45 p.m. (CST) contest. The Eagles will conclude the conference road trip at Northern Kentucky University Saturday at noon (CST).

The next home game for the Eagles will be January 14 when they start a two-game homestand by hosting Quincy University.
