Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) scored 23 points each to lead the Screaming Eagles to an 82-70 victory over Quincy University Thursday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI raises its record 17-1 overall and 6-1 in the GLVC, while Quincy falls to 8-6, 3-3 GLVC.
Gibson scored his 23 points by going six-of-nine from the field, including four three-point field goals, and seven-of-nine from the charity stripe. He also had five assists.
Thompson continued to have the hot hand for the Eagles, shooting seven-of-11 from the field, including a three-point field goal, and a perfect eight-of-eight from the line. He tied junior guard/forwardÂ
Marty Wise (New Orleans, Louisiana) with a team-leading nine rebounds.
The victory extended USI's winning streak to 10 straight and to 32 straight at the PAC. The longest home winning streak in the history of the program is 35 games between January 14, 1999, and February 22, 2001.
Quincy led by five early, 16-11, with 11:31 left in the first half. The Eagles took the lead with a 10-0 run and outscored the Hawks, 13-11, to lead 34-27 at halftime.
USI extended its lead to 17 points twice before Quincy made one final run in the final two minutes of the game. The Hawks clawed to within eight points, 76-68 and 78-70, in the final minute, but could get no closer.
USI completes the two-game homestand Saturday by hosting Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Game time Saturday is 3:15 p.m. SIUE is 10-3, 4-2 GLVC, after defeating Kentucky Wesleyan College Thursday night, 79-63, in Owensboro, Kentucky.
