Eagles comeback to knock off No. 11 Wildcats

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team came back from a 2-1 deficit to top No. 11 Northern Michigan University, 30-27, 17-30, 29-31, 30-24, 15-11, in a regional showdown in the Cougar Classic at the Vadalabene Center.

Freshman middle blocker/right side hitter Meg Buschman (Reynolds, Indiana) recorded four of her 15 kills in the fifth and deciding game as the Screaming Eagles improved to 3-3 on the season.

Senior middle blocker Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) led the Eagles with a match-high 25 kills, while junior outside hitters Emily Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) and Chelse Doubler (Griffin, Indiana) chipped in 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana) had a match-high 60 assists and a career-high 24 digs in the win.

Defensively, freshman libero/defensive specialist Amber Gogel (Ferdinand, Indiana) matched Wilson with a team-high 24 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Molly Rahman (Ferdinand, Indiana) and Ellerbusch chipped in 15 and 12 digs, respectively.

Earlier in the day, the Eagles bested Missouri Southern State University, 30-28, 30-32, 30-28, 30-24, as five USI players finished with at least 10 kills. Doubler led the Eagles with 18 kills, while Ellerbusch and Buschman chipped in 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Rahman and Ryan each had 10 kills, while Wilson, who moved into fifth-place on USI's all-time assist list a week ago, finished with a match-high 56 assists.

Gogel led a list of five USI players to finish in double-digits in the digs department. Gogel finished with 24, while junior defensive specialist Amanda Probst (Wheeler, Illinois) chipped in 16.

Ellerbusch, who had six blocks against MSSU, added 13 digs, while Rahman and Wilson finished with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

USI will take on No. 2 Truman State University Saturday at noon before concluding the weekend's action with Alderson-Broaddus College at 2:30 p.m.
