USI women’s soccer wins opener 2-1

Southern Indiana (1-0-0): 2 Ferris State University (0-1-0): 1

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team opened the 2005 campaign with a victory after defeating Ferris State University, 2-1, in the Grand Valley State Tournament in Allendale, Michigan. USI (1-0-0) will finish play in the tournament by playing host Grand Valley State University, Sunday at noon (CDT).

GVSU plays Quincy University in the nightcap the tournament first round this afternoon.

The Screaming Eagles led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by sophomore forward Julie Collins (Merrillville, Indiana). Collins scored her first goal of the season off a pass from sophomore forward Katie Grossman (Evansville, Indiana) with 10 minutes gone in the first half.

After Ferris State tied the game 1-1 at the 74:47 mark, sophomore midfielder Meghann Cage (Evansville, Indiana) scored the game winner for USI with just under six minutes to play in the match. Cage scored her first collegiate goal off an assist by Collins.

Following Sunday's match, the Eagles will open the 2005 home schedule at Strassweg Field by hosting Ashland University for a men's and women's doubleheader. The women's match will kick-off at noon.
