EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team's NCAA II Tournament hopes will go through the GLVC Tournament this weekend at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois.
USI (27-18), which has fallen out of the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional rankings, enters the GLVC Tournament as the fifth seed and will play Lewis University (27-20) in the first round Friday at 9 a.m. The Screaming Eagles split a doubleheader with the Flyers last Sunday, losing the first game, 4-1, before taking the second game, 6-3.
Senior centerfielder
Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) and sophomore catcher
Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) led the Eagles at the plate during the regular season. Oelling, who had 15 RBIs, led the Eagles with a .355 batting average and 30 runs scored, while Anderson, who was second on the team with a .341 batting average, led USI with 28 RBIs.
Freshman third baseman
Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) tied Anderson for the team lead with eight doubles and was third on the team with a .297 batting average and 15 RBIs.
Junior pitcher
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) leads USI's pitching staff with 14 wins and a 1.91 ERA, while fellow classmate
Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) has compiled an 11-7 record and a 2.39 ERA.
Lewis is led by junior All-American leftfielder Robin Martz. She leads the GLVC with a .491 batting average and 51 runs scored. Freshman utility player Shannon Roney leads the Flyers' pitching staff with a 2.06 ERA and an 11-7 record.
USI, which is 5-8 against this year's field, could possibly face No. 1-ranked Northern Kentucky University (46-0), if it gets by Lewis, in the second round Friday. The championship game of the double-elimination tournament is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m., with a second elimination game, if needed, scheduled for 3 p.m.
