EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team capitalized on five Lewis University errors to win game two, 6-3 and salvage a split of a doubleheader after losing 4-1 in the opener Sunday afternoon at the USI Softball Field.
Freshman third baseman
Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) hit a two-out, three-run double into the left-centerfield gap to give the Screaming Eagles a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning of game two. USI started the inning off with junior shortstop
Krista Nugent (Hurricane, Utah) reaching first base on an error by Lewis second baseman Mallory Paine.
USI (27-18, 10-8 GLVC) took advantage of two more Lewis errors in the next inning to plate a pair of runners and increase its lead to 5-0. Sophomore catcher
Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana), who saw her 13-game hitting streak come to an end in game one, singled in the fourth to drive in both of USI's runs.
Junior hurler
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) surrendered three runs in the fifth inning, but held her ground to pick up her team-leading 14th victory of the season. Grover (14-9) allowed eight hits, but walked just two batters and kept Lewis's All-America candidate, Robin Martz, from inflicting any damage.
Martz hurt the Eagles in the first game, going 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored as Lewis jumped out to a 3-0 advantage. Lewis third baseman Amy Yusko went 2-for-4 and drove in the Flyers' first two runs of the contest and Lewis pitcher Shannon Roney homered in the sixth inning to finish off the scoring.
Sophomore second baseman
Kerrie Burton (Kokomo, Indiana) drove in USI's lone run of the contest on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth inning. Eickholt led the Eagles at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Junior pitcher
Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Illinois) gave up all four runs off nine hits in seven innings as she was charged with her seventh loss of the season. She falls to 11-7 on the year.
The Eagles will enter the GLVC Tournament as the fifth seed and will play Lewis, which finishes the regular season with a 27-20 overall record and 12-8 mark in the GLVC, in the first round Friday at 9 a.m. at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois.
