RENSSELAER, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team saw its record-win streak come to an end Saturday, but not before the Screaming Eagles pushed it to 18 straight victories.
USI (18-9, 3-1 GLVC) got a one-out, three-run double from sophomore second baseman
Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana) in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Saint Joseph's College, 3-0, in the first game.
Junior hurler
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) gave up just one hit as she picked up the complete-game shutout. Grover's personal winning streak increased to 11 straight with the victory.
Grover (11-4) pitched the second game as well, giving up just one run off five hits in six innings of work. Her win streak came to an end, though, as the Eagles failed to push across a run and fell to the Pumas, 1-0.
USI had runners at second and third in the top of the seventh, but could not push across the potential game-tying run. The Eagles were held to just four hits in the second game, with one of the hits off the bat of senior rightfielder
Nickole Henson (Princeton, Indiana). Henson's single in the first inning extended her hitting streak to nine games, marking the second time this year that she has recorded such a streak.
The Eagles, who are now fourth in the GLVC standings after the loss, will visit the University of Indianapolis for a noon doubleheader on Sunday before coming back to the friendly confines of the USI Softball Field for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against McKendree College on Monday. USI will host No. 14-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at the USI Softball Field on Thursday at 3 p.m.
