EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana senior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) singled in senior shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana) with the winning run in the eighth inning to give the Screaming Eagles a 7-6 extra-inning victory and a doubleheader split with the University of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field.

USI goes to 16-16 overall and 8-8 in the GLVC, while Indianapolis goes to 12-20 overall, 5-13 GLVC. The Eagles are 5-1 at the half-way point of the 14-game homestand.

Wetzel led the Eagles in the nightcap, going three-for-five with a run scored and a pair of RBIs. Junior first baseman Derik Hutton (Versailles, Indiana) also drove in a pair of runs, going two-for-three in game two.

USI freshman right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) picked up his first collegiate victory in relief, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Kehrt (1-2) allowed just a hit and a walk, while striking out one.

Eagles' sophomore right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) started the game, going the first five innings and allowed all six Indianapolis runs. The five-inning performance was his shortest effort since March 11 after going seven or more innings in his previous four starts. Summers gave way to junior lefthander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) in the sixth after walking the first hitter.

In the opener, the Eagles rallied from behind twice and missed a chance to score with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth in falling 5-3 in 10-innings.

USI senior right-hander Jae Fadde (West Lafayette, Indiana) was the tough-luck loser in game one. Fadde (2-3) went 9 2/3 innings, allowing five earned runs and 10 hits, and striking out five.

The teams battled to a 1-1 tie through the first seven innings and plated a pair of runs in the first extra inning to send the game into the ninth. The Eagles would miss a chance to win the game with the bases loaded and one out when senior pinch-hitter Andy Rock (West Chester, Ohio) lined out to a drawn in outfield and freshman third baseman Sam Shahine (Brookville, Indiana) struck out to end the inning.

The team will be back on the USI Baseball Field Sunday at noon to complete the GLVC four-game series.
