Kunkle reaches milestone as Eagles set record

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana softball Head Coach Sue Kunkle reached her 100th career win and the Screaming Eagles set a program record for consecutive victories as USI swept Kentucky Wesleyan College, 12-5 and 4-2, in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at the USI Softball Field.

The Eagles (17-8), winners of 17 straight games, started the afternoon on the wrong foot, giving up two runs to the Panthers in the top of the first inning. USI battled back with a run in the bottom of the first and two more in the second to take a 3-2 lead.

Holding a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Eagles jumped on a pair of KWC errors to plate six runners and blow the game wide-open.

Senior centerfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs, while sophomore second baseman Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs. Sophomore catcher Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) as well as junior designated player Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) and junior first baseman Angie Davis (Greenwood, Indiana) each had a pair of runs batted in.

Despite giving up five runs off nine hits and a pair of walks, junior pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) held on to pick up her career-high 10th straight victory. Grover (10-3) struck out four batters as she recorded her team-leading ninth complete game of the season.

In her first career start, freshman pitcher/outfielder Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) picked up her first victory in the second game. Wood (1-0) retired the first seven batters she faced and spread seven hits throughout seven innings, giving up a pair of runs in the seventh.

Lindenschmidt spurred the Eagles' offense in the second game, going 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior shortstop Krista Nugent (Hurricane, Utah) drove in two runs, while Oelling and senior rightfielder Nickole Henson (Princeton, Indiana) extended their hitting streaks to eight and seven games, respectively. Lindenschmidt also has hit safely in six straight games.

Sophomore pitcher Teresa Hodge (1-3) was charged with the loss in game one after giving up six runs, four earned, in five innings of work. Freshman hurler Ryan Montes (3-7) was charged with the loss in game two, giving up four runs off nine hits. The Panthers fall to 5-19 with the loss.

USI will return to action Saturday when it travels to Rensselaer, Indiana, to take on Saint Joseph's College in a GLVC doubleheader. The Eagles will travel to Indianapolis to take on the University of Indianapolis on Sunday before returning home to take on McKendree College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader Monday. Both GLVC doubleheaders start at noon.
