EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team will close out its regular season this weekend when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday and Lewis University Sunday. Both doubleheaders are slated for noon starts and Sunday is Senior Day as well as Varsity Club Day at the USI Softball Field.
USI (25-16, 8-6 GLVC) controls its own destiny in the conference. The Screaming Eagles, currently sixth in the league, can finish as high as third in the conference regular season.
Junior pitchers
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) and
Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) will lead USI's defense into this weekend's competition. Grover (13-8) leads the Eagles with a 1.65 ERA and a .219 opponent batting average. McNaughton (10-6), who is coming off a one-hit shutout at Kentucky Wesleyan last Sunday, has a 2.38 ERA and has helped the Eagles' staff compile a team ERA of 1.92, fourth-best in the GLVC.
Offensively, senior centerfielder
Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) and sophomore catcher
Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) have been creating the most havoc against opposing pitchers. Oelling, the team's leadoff hitter, is batting a team-best .375 and is 9-of-10 in the stolen base department this season.
Anderson, who matched Oelling's team-best 11-game hitting streak on Sunday, is batting .339 with a team-leading eight doubles and 24 runs batted in.
UW-Parkside (25-19, 10-6 GLVC), which plays St. Xavier Thursday, is led by senior third baseman/designated player Meloney Strohbusch and junior pitcher Kristen Brestan. Strohbusch leads the league in home runs (9) and has a team-leading .372 batting average and 37 RBIs. Brestan has a team-best 1.49 ERA and leads the Rangers with 10 wins.
Lewis (26-17, 11-5 GLVC), which plays SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, is led by junior centerfielder Robin Martz and freshman pitcher Shannon Roney. Martz leads the league in batting average (.471) and is second in the GLVC in runs scored (45), while Roney leads the Flyers in wins (9) and ERA (1.94).
The Eagles will honor Oelling as well as fellow seniors
Nickole Henson (Princeton, Indiana) and
Stephanie Brown (Evansville, Indiana) prior to Sunday's contests. The GLVC Tournament is May 6-8 at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois.
