ST. LOUIS, Mo.
 – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team reached the .500 mark for the season and on the 12-game road swing with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tuesday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. USI, which is 4-4 on the road trip, won the opener, 8-2, and the nightcap, 7-2.

The Screaming Eagles reach the .500 mark with a 24-24 overall record and a 16-16 mark in the GLVC, while the Rivermen fall to 15-26, 7-23 GLVC. The doubleheader victory marked the first time since 1985 that USI has swept a season-series from UMSL.

USI moves up a spot in the GLVC race to seventh, passing Kentucky Wesleyan College, which is 15-15 in the league and idle today. The Eagles remain two-games out on the loss side to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Quincy University, which are tied for fifth at 16-14 in the GLVC.

USI senior right-handed pitcher Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) did it all for USI in the 8-2 game one win. Keener (3-3) earned his third victory of the year and struck out five in throwing his first complete of game of the year. He scattered four hits and did not allow a run until the bottom of the seventh.

At the plate, Keener combined with senior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) and sophomore rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) for seven of USI's 12 hits and five RBIs. Keener was one-for-three with three RBIs and a run scored, while Wetzel was two-for-four and scored a pair of runs.

Slade record a season-best four hits in five at-bats while driving in a pair of runs.

In the nightcap, Slade drove in three of USI's seven runs as the Eagles won 7-2. Keener and Wetzel also keyed the offensive attack with each scoring twice.

USI sophomore right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) threw 6 1/3 innings of game two to earn his fourth victory of the year. Vetter (4-3) allowed three hits and two runs, and one earned run. He also struck out six UMSL batters.

Freshman right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) finished the game for USI to earn his first collegiate save. Kehrt struck out six of the 10 batters he faced through 2 2/3 inning of work.

USI concludes the 12-game road trip by playing a four-game series at Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana, Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders are scheduled for noon starts. The Eagles will finish the 2005 regular season at the USI Baseball Field by hosting a four-game series with Northern Kentucky University May 7-8.
