USI baseball loses a pair of leads in being swept

QUINCY, Ill.
– The University of Southern Indiana baseball team let a pair of leads slip through its fingers while dropping a doubleheader to Quincy University Saturday afternoon in Quincy, Illinois. USI, which has lost four in a row to start the 12-game road swing, falls to 20-24 overall and 12-16 in the GLVC, while Quincy goes to 24-18 overall, 16-10 in the GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener on a pair of tallies in the second inning. Senior shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana) and junior catcher Chris Turner (West Lafayette, Indiana) scored when freshman leftfielder Justin Wolfe (Brookville, Indiana) reached on a throwing error by Quincy shortstop Chris Scroggins.

The Hawks bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the third, aided by three walks by USI starting right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana). Vetter (3-3) took the loss for the Eagles, going 2 1/3 innings and allowing four runs, three hits and three walks.

After USI pulled to with 4-3 in the fourth, Quincy plated a run in the fourth and sixth to sealed the 6-3 victory. Turner led USI offensively in game one, going two-for-three with a pair of runs scored.

The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings in the nightcap, scoring three in the third and one in the fourth. The Hawks scored five unanswered runs with three in the fifth, one in the sixth, and one in the seventh to take a 5-4 advantage.

USI tied the score, 5-5, in the eighth when senior first baseman Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) scored on a sacrifice fly by senior pinch hitter Andy Rock (West Chester, Ohio). Keener finished the second game by going three-for-four with a run scored and a RBI.

The game-winning run came in the bottom of the ninth when Quincy rightfielder Wes Steele hit a home run to right field off of USI junior left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana). The loss was the first of the year for Arnold, who had given up only one run in his last 10 appearances coming into today's action.

Eagles' right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) started the game for USI, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing 10 hits and five runs, four earned, before being relieved by freshman right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana).

USI and Quincy conclude their four-game series Sunday with a noon doubleheader.
