USI softball falls to Brescia

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team was swept by Brescia University, 6-1 and 2-1, Tuesday evening at the USI Softball Field.

USI (23-16) had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two, but came up short as sophomore second baseman Kerrie Burton (Kokomo, Indiana) was thrown out at home plate for the final out of the contest.

The Screaming Eagles lone run of game two came in the fourth inning when junior first baseman Angie Davis (Greenwood, Indiana) singled to right field, driving in senior outfielder Stephanie Brown (Evansville, Indiana), who was in the game as a pinch runner for sophomore designated player/catcher Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana).

Junior pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana), who gave up two runs off seven hits, was charged with the loss in game two. Grover (12-8) struck out five batters. Lindsey Hanor, who came in the game in the fourth inning, allowed just one run in four innings of work to pick up the victory.

Brescia (21-13) scored five unanswered runs, including a three-run sixth inning, to win the first game.

Freshman hurler Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) was charged with the loss, the first of the season for the lefthander, after giving up five runs off nine hits in five-plus innings of work. Wood fell to 2-1 with the set back.

Jenny Hall earned the victory for the Bearcats in game one as she gave up just one unearned run on five hits in five innings of work.

USI will return to GLVC action when it travels to No. 2-ranked Northern Kentucky University Saturday and Kentucky Wesleyan College Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 11 a.m. (CST), while Sunday's doubleheader starts at noon (CST).

The Eagles will finish their regular season schedule with six straight home games, starting with a non-conference doubleheader against Bellarmine University April 27.
