USI baseball finishes homestand with split

Screaming Eagles go 9-5 during homestand

EVANSVILLE, Ind.
– The University of Southern Indiana baseball team completed its 14-game homestand with a doubleheader split with Lewis University Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles won the opener, 4-2, but lost the nightcap, 5-2.

USI remains .500 for the season with a 20-20 overall record and 12-12 in the GLVC, while Lewis goes to 7-31 overall, 5-21 GLVC. The Eagles were 9-5 during the homestand.

Eagles' sophomore right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) posted his third victory over the year in game one. Vetter (3-2) allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out two in 5 2/3 innings of work. Freshman right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) helped Vetter out of a first and second two-out jam in the sixth by getting the only batter he would face before turning the game over to junior left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana).

Arnold recorded his team-high fourth save of the year by allowing just one hit in the ninth.

At the plate, senior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) was a perfect three-for-three and scored a run in the pivotal three-run fifth inning for the Eagles.

In the nightcap, the USI bats could not get a hit at the right time against Lewis right-hander David Scheibe and stranded 10 runners. Scheibe (2-2) scattered 12 USI hits and allowed two runs in the complete game win for the Flyers.

USI senior right-hander Andy Rumpler (Hamilton, Ohio) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing all five runs, four earned, in 3 1/3 innings of work. Freshman right-hander Matt Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana) pitched well for USI in relief, throwing 4 2/3 scoreless innings.

Offensively, freshman leftfielder Justin Wolfe (Brookville, Indiana) led the Eagles with three hits in the lead-off position. Senior rightfielder Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana), junior first baseman Derik Hutton (Versailles, Indiana), and freshman third baseman Sam Shahine (West Lafayette, Indiana) followed Wolfe with two hits apiece.

Starting next week, the Eagles go on the road for 12 games before finishing the regular season at home, May 7-8, against Northern Kentucky University. USI begins its road trip Wednesday with a doubleheader at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky. Game time is noon (CDT).
