EVANSVILLE, Ind.
 – The University of Southern Indiana baseball finally finished a doubleheader with Kentucky Wesleyan College, but lost a pair, 7-1 and 7-3, Thursday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI falls to 17-19 overall and 9-11 in the GLVC, while KWC rises to 14-17 overall, 10-10 GLVC.

The Panther won the suspended first game, 7-1, by blanking the Screaming Eagles in the sixth and the seventh. KWC hurler Erik Ping had to wait nearly 48 hours to claim his second victory of the year after holding USI to one hit and one unearned run over five innings. Right-hander T.J. Shelters finished the game for the Panthers, allowing two hits in two innings.

USI's senior right-hander Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) took the loss, dropping to 2-3 in 2005.

In the nightcap, USI jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings. The Eagles drew first blood in the second inning when senior shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana) singled in freshman leftfielder Justin Wolfe (Brookville, Indiana).

USI extended the lead to 2-0 in the third inning when junior catcher Chris Turner (West Lafayette, Indiana) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter Derik Hutton (Versailles, Indiana).

The Panthers responded with seven unanswered runs, scoring two in the fifth, two in the seventh, and three in the eighth to take the lead 7-2. USI scored a single tally in the ninth when senior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) doubled in Turner to make the score 7-3.

Freshman right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) took the loss in relief for USI. Kehrt (1-3) relieved junior starter Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana) and allowed two runs in 2 1/3 innings of work. Watson went the first 4 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits.

The Eagles complete the 14-game homestand this weekend with a four-game series against Lewis University. The first pitch Saturday and Sunday is scheduled for noon each day. USI is 6-4 after the first 10 games of the homestand.
