EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana senior right-hander Andy Rumpler (Hamilton, Ohio) stumped the University of Indianapolis in the nightcap to earn his first victory of the year, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field.

Rumpler (1-3) allowed two runs and four hits in the first three inning before getting on track and allowing just three hits through the next 5 1/3 innings. For the game, Rumpler allowed seven hits and two runs, while striking out one in 8 1/3 innings of work.

Sophomore right-hander Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) picked his second save of the year by setting down the only two batters he would face to finish game for Rumpler.

Tied 2-2 since the third inning, the Eagles scored the winning runs in the bottom of the seventh. Junior designated-hitter Derik Hutton (Versailles, Indiana) drove in the winning runs with a two-out double to left center, plating senior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) and senior first baseman Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) to make the score 4-2.

Hutton, who was two-for-three with three RBIs in the nightcap, would cross the plate with the final tally of the game when sophomore rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) doubled down the left field line.

In the opener, Indianapolis scored a run in the top of the seventh to defeat the Eagles, 2-1. Greyhound first baseman Brent Miller singled to left field to score centerfielder Justin Russell with the game winner.

Indianapolis right-hander Gary Mauer shut down the USI offense, allwing just five hits and one run over seven innings. The Eagles also left 11 men on-base, leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth innings.

USI senior right-hander Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) took the loss in relief for the Eagles. Goans (0-2) allowed Russell to reach base before Miller singled in the winning run off of junior left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana).

Eagles' right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) started the game, allowing seven hits and one run over 5 1/3 innings of work.

USI, which is 17-17 overall and 9-9 GLVC, resumes GLVC action Tuesday when it hosts Kentucky Wesleyan College in a league doubleheader. Game time is 1 p.m. The Eagles are 6-2 on the 14-game homestand.
