Eagles fall in late innings

KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team dropped a pair of games today at the Division II Rebel Spring Games. The Screaming Eagles fell to No. 3-ranked Shippensburg University, 4-0, before losing a heart-breaker to Kutztown University, 7-6, in 11 innings.

USI (0-8) surrendered a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and a run in each of the third and fifth innings as it fell to Shippensburg in the first game. Sophomore Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs in an inning and a third of work.

On the strength of a 4-for-4 performance out of sophomore catcher Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana), the Eagles jumped out in front of Kutztown 3-0 after five innings. Anderson recorded a double and three RBIs in the game.

Kutztown, however, scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to send the contest to extra frames. Each team scored in the ninth and 10th innings, but a two-run 11th inning for Kutztown handed the Eagles their eighth consecutive loss.

Junior Lindsay McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) was charged with her fourth loss of the season after giving up four runs in a relief effort that began in the sixth inning. Fellow classmate Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) started the game, but was pulled in the sixth inning after giving up three runs.

USI will play the University of New Haven and California University-Pennsylvania Tuesday at 1:20 and 3:10 p.m. (CST), respectively.
