EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team broke a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Bellamrine University in the nightcap of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Knights took the opener 1-0.
The Screaming Eagles finish the day 10-14 overall and 2-6 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine goes to 6-17 overall, 1-7 GLVC.
USI sophomore right-handerÂ
Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) led the Screaming Eagles on the mound by posting his second complete game of the year and his team-high fourth victory of the year. Summers (4-1) allowed just four hits, one run and struck out one over the nine innings.
The Eagles struck first in the victory when senior rightfielderÂ
Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) singled in freshman leftfielderÂ
Justin Wolfe (Brookville, Indiana) with one out in the first inning. Wolfe put himself in scoring position with a lead-off triple.
After Bellarmine tied the score with a tally in the third, Wolfe scored the game-winner for USI in the bottom of sixth. Wolfe, who had singled to left and stole second with one out, scored after advancing to third on a fly ball to right-center by Keener and crossed the plate after Bellarmine second baseman Rusty Farris threw wildly to third base.
In the opener, Bellarmine right-hander Chris Kern out-dueled USI senior right-handerÂ
Jae Fadde (West Lafayette, Indiana) for the victory. Kern (1-4) went seven innings and allowed just four hits while striking out seven USI batters.
Fadde (1-2) pitched brilliantly for the Eagles, going all seven innings. He allowed four hits and an unearned run while striking out four in absorbing the loss.
Bellarmine scored the games only run in the fourth inning when Knights' shortstop Marcus Bickwermert scored on a single by rightfielder Brad Schum. Bickwermert had reached on an error by USI senior second basemanÂ
Bryan Davis (West Chester, Ohio) with one out.
The Eagles let chances slip by in the final four innings. USI stranded five runners and had one runner thrown out in a run-down between third and home after trying to score on a single.
USI resumes GLVC action this weekend in four-game home-and-home series with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The teams will play 1 p.m. doubleheaders in Edwardsville, Illinois, Saturday and at the USI Baseball Field Sunday.
