EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team was swept this weekend by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, dropping a suspended game and a doubleheader to the Rangers Sunday at the USI Baseball Field. The Rangers won Saturday's suspended game, 11-7, and swept the doubleheader, 9-0 and 2-0.
USI falls to 9-13 overall and 1-5 in the GLVC, while UWP goes to 12-7 overall and 7-1 in the GLVC.
In the suspended game, the game restarted with USI down 9-5 in the top of the seventh. The Screaming Eagles plated a pair of runs in the bottom of half of the inning to pull to within 9-7, but that would be as close as they would get.
The Eagles left three runners on in the eighth inning after loading the bases with one out. The Rangers responded to the Eagles' threat with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to seal the game, 11-7. Overall, USI left 12 runners on in the game.
In the regularly scheduled doubleheader, The Rangers pitchers – Shaun Corning and Paul Gagliardi – stymied USI hitters all day. Corning held the Eagles hitless until junior catcher/first baseman
Chris Turner (West Lafayette, Indiana) singled in the sixth to break-up the no-hitter.
In the final game of the day, USI got a great pitching performance from senior right-hander
Andy Rumpler (Hamilton, Ohio), only to be out-dueled by Gagliardi. Rumpler went all six innings for USI and allowed two runs on 10 hits in falling to 0-2 in 2005.
The Eagles resume GLVC play Tuesday at Bellarmine University. The conference doubleheader is scheduled for an 11 a.m. (CST) start. The next home game for the Eagles is April 3 when they host Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for a pair of conference games.
