Eagles run win streak to 11

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team defeated Ashland University, 3-2, and Kentucky Wesleyan College, 7-5, Friday at the USI Softball Field to run its winning streak to 11.

USI (11-8) erased a 2-0 deficit in its win over Ashland, scoring a pair of runs in the top half of the third inning and the winning run in the sixth. The Screaming Eagles capitalized on an error and a wild pitch in the third inning as well as an error in the sixth inning to pull out the victory.

Junior Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) extended her winning streak to seven games. Grover (7-3) gave up two runs, one earned, off three hits in seven innings of work.

The Eagles scored four runs off five hits in the bottom of the first inning in their victory over KWC. USI rapped out 13 hits in the game, 10 in the first four innings alone.

KWC (4-10) scored three runs in the top of the seventh off sophomore reliever Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky), but junior Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) re-entered the contest to close the door on the Panther comeback.

McNaughton (4-4) picked up her fourth straight decision, allowing up just one run off one hit in the first five innings of the game before giving way to Nichols in the sixth inning. McNaughton allowed just one runner to reach base in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Offensively, senior centerfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored against KWC, while freshman third baseman Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Indiana) went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Oelling was 5-for-8 on the day.

Due to scheduling issues, USI's doubleheader with Ashland on Saturday has been cancelled. The Eagles will host Oakland City University Thursday at the USI Softball Field. That doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
