EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team opened GLVC action with a split at Kentucky Wesleyan College Thursday afternoon in Owensboro, Kentucky. KWC won the opener, 5-1, while USI captured the nightcap 4-3.

The Screaming Eagles took their record to 9-9 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC, while KWC goes to 3-11 overall and 2-4 GLVC.
In the nightcap, USI sophomore Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) shut down KWC for seven innings to earn his third victory of the year. Summers (3-1) scattered five hits and allowed three runs (one earned) while striking out a career-high seven batters.

The Eagles junior left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) earned his team-best third save of the year by getting the last two outs in the ninth. Senior right-hander Andy Rumpler (Hamilton, Ohio) and sophomore right-hander Aaron Clark(Madisonville, Kentucky) set Arnold up for the save by combining to pitch 1 1/3 innings of one-hit relief.

Offensively, the Eagles have to come-from-behind for the fourth time in six games to earn the victory. The Panthers scored a pair of unearned runs in the second to take the early lead. USI cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth and pushed the winning runs across the plate with three tallies in the seventh.

Senior rightfielder Matt Keener (Evansville, Indiana) led the team offensively in game two with three hits, a run scored, and a RBI.

KWC capitalized on four hit batters, resulting in three runs, in the 5-1 victory to open the doubleheader. The Panthers posted a 5-0 lead off of USI senior starter Jae Fadde (West Lafayette, Indiana) before the Eagles could get onto the scoreboard.

Fadde allowed four hits and five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of work. Fadde, who struck out three, was relieved by freshman right-hander Matt Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana). Nichols worked the final 1 2/3 innings, striking out three hitters.

USI scored its only run in the top of sixth when senior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) scored on a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Trevor Kelly (Marshall, Michigan).

The Eagles resume GLVC action Saturday and Sunday when they host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at the USI Baseball Field. The first pitch of both doubleheaders is scheduled for noon.
