OAKLAND CITY, Ind.
– The University of Southern Indiana baseball team used the long ball to sweep a road-doubleheader from Oakland City University Saturday afternoon in Oakland City, Indiana. USI goes to 6-8 overall, while Oakland City goes to 7-5 in 2005.

USI senior shortstop Corey Goers' (LaPorte, Indiana) two-run home run in the top of the top seventh gave the Screaming Eagles an 11-9 victory in the opener. The two-run shot was the first of the season for Goers.

The home run capped the third comeback in game one by the Eagles. USI jumped out in front, 5-0, before the Mighty Oaks scored six in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. The Eagles would tie the game 6-6 in the fifth and 8-8 in the sixth, but OCU would take a 9-8 lead into the final inning.

USI sophomore outfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) knotted the game up at 9-9 on a RBI double, scoring freshman infielder Sam Shahine (West Lafayette, Indiana) all the way from first. Slade also would score the winning run on Goers' blast.

Eagles' sophomore right-hander Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) picked up the victory in relief in game one, while junior left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) posted his first save of the year. Clark (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and one run. Junior right-hander Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana) started for the Eagles, going four innings and allowing eight runs on six hits.

In the nightcap, freshman third baseman Josh Malone (Chesterton, Indiana) hit a three-run home run and sophomore catcher Jed Davis (Grayville, Indiana) hit a two-run shot in the third inning to propel the Eagles to a 11-7 victory. USI trailed 5-3 when Malone gave USI the lead for good. The homers were the first of the year for Malone and Davis.

USI senior outfielder/infielder Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) capped the Eagles' power eruption with a solo shot in the sixth for the 11-7 final. Keener leads the team with four home runs this season.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) picked up the complete game victory for the Eagles. Summers (2-1) went all seven innings, allowing seven runs, six earned, and scattered 10 hits.

The four-game series moves to USI Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for noon. The Eagles open the GLVC schedule Wednesday with a noon doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan College.
