EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team extended its winning streak to nine games by sweeping a doubleheader from NCAA Division I Morehead State University Saturday at the USI Softball Field. The Screaming Eagles won the first game, 2-0, before winning the second contest, 5-1.
Junior pitcher
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) allowed just two base runners in game one as she recorded a one-hit shutout to lead the Eagles to their first victory of the afternoon. Grover (6-3) has won six straight games, recording an eye-popping 0.58 ERA during that span. She has not given up a run in her last 24 innings of work.
The Eagles (9-8) took advantage of a pair of errors in the bottom of the fifth inning to score their first run. Senior right-fielder
Nickole Henson (Princeton, Indiana) drove in the run with a single to centerfield. Henson extended her team-high hitting streak to nine games with the single, but saw it come to an end with a 0-for-4 performance in the second game.
USI used a three-run homer off the stick of sophomore first baseman/catcher
Kristy Groves (Dale, Indiana) in the bottom of the fourth inning of game two to break a scoreless tie. Groves hit her first home run of the year over the right-centerfield fence to give the Eagles the 3-0 advantage.
The Eagles took advantage of two MSU errors in the fifth inning to plate two more runs before giving up their only run of the afternoon on a two-out solo home run by pinch-hitter Liz McGonnigal in the top of the seventh inning.
Junior hurler Lyndsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) picked up the victory to improve her record to 3-4. McNaughton spread six hits throughout seven innings to earn her third straight decision.
Stephanie Hernandez (0-2) and Kari Quinn (2-3) each were charged with losses as MSU fell to 6-12.
USI will host McKendree College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday at the USI Softball Field. The Eagles will play in the Great Lakes Regional Showdown in Battle Creek, Michigan, March 25-26.
